FoundType

FoundType turns the letters you photograph in the street into a personal A–Z library! Each glyph cut out on device, filed by character, tagged with where and when you caught it. Then you compose them back into Reels videos, ransom notes and word walls

Problem

Interesting letters are everywhere, from shop signs and street art to packaging and handwritten notes. People photograph them for inspiration or memory, but those images disappear into the camera roll and are rarely used again. Existing tools can identify a font or create a collage, but none turn letters discovered in everyday life into a personal collection and creative material.

Outcome

Reached 204 first time downloads after launch

I independently designed and built FoundType, a camera first iOS app that turns everyday typography into a personal creative collection. Users can capture letters, organize them by character, time, and place, then transform their discoveries into collages, videos, and playful visual compositions.

Product Overview

How I got there?

Design Process

Opportunity

I began with a simple observation: people already photograph unusual signs, lettering, and typography they notice in everyday life. The behavior existed, but the experience ended after the photo was taken. Font recognition tools help people identify typefaces, while collage apps help them arrange existing images. I saw an opportunity to connect discovery, collection, memory, and creation in one playful mobile experience.

How Might We

turn letters found in everyday life into a collection people enjoy building and creating with?

Define the Product

1. Make Capture Feel Effortless

Let people move from noticing a letter to saving it in a few natural steps, without turning the moment into a technical task.

2. Make Collecting Rewarding

Organize letters by character, time, and place so every new discovery adds visible progress and personal meaning.

3. Turn a Collection into Play

Give people simple ways to transform saved letters into collages, videos, maps, and visual messages.

Test & Feedback

Protecting the Flow When Recognition Is Imperfect

The most interesting letters are often the hardest to recognize. Decorative type, unusual spacing, perspective, shadows, and textured backgrounds can all produce imperfect selections. I tested FoundType with real signs and everyday lettering to understand where the capture experience broke.

The goal was not perfect automation. It was making sure users could always recover quickly and keep the moment playful.

Turning Imperfect Capture into a Satisfying Flow

Testing showed that automation worked well for clear lettering but became less reliable with the unusual type that made FoundType interesting. Instead of asking users to retake the photo or accept the result, I designed a flexible correction flow that keeps them in control.

01 Make Every Capture Easy to Correct
Before

Automatic boundaries could miss decorative letters or include too much of the surrounding image, leaving users with no clear way to fix the result.

After

Users can zoom, refine the crop, drag individual boundaries, correct the character, or add a missed letter manually before saving.

02 Give the Collection a Purpose
Before

Saving letters was satisfying at first, but the library became a passive archive with little reason to return after the collection grew.

After

I added Compose modes that turn collected letters into collages, videos, ransom notes, and word walls. Every creation gives users a reason to collect more.

Outcome

Launched a complete capture to creation experience
